Montreal is the largest city in Quebec and the second largest in Canada. More than  3,635,571 people live in the Montreal. About 66.5% of the population in Montreal speak French as a first language, followed by English at 13.2%, and 0.8% speaking both as a first language. Montreal has the second-largest economy in Canada, based on GDP. 

The city is an important centre of commerce, finance, industry, technology, culture, world affairs and is the headquarters of the Montreal Exchange. The Montreal Oil Refining Centre is the largest refining centre in Canada. It includes companies such as Petro-Canada, Ultramar, Gulf Oil, Petromont, Ashland Canada, Parachem Petrochemical, Coastal Petrochemical, Interquisa (Cepsa) Petrochemical, Nova Chemicals and many more.

Montreal also has an important role in the finance industry. The official legal corporate head offices of both Bank of Montreal and Royal Bank of Canada, which are two of the five biggest banks in Canada, are still in Montreal (while their operational corporate headquarters are in Toronto, Ontario).

Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Montreal. The Montreal Canadians are one of the six original teams of the NHL.
